I had heard that people swim with the manatees many years ago and I didn't know where this happened. I thought I better nose around and find out where while I'm in Florida. I found out that this happens at a place called Crystal River.
Whenever we decided to visit with the manatees, we needed a place to stay and there was a state park near but it was sold out. Everything we could find was 60 bucks a night so that wasn't any fun.
We found a place on freecamp.net that was at a state forest called Goethe.
We checked it out and it was a very big sprawling field with several places that you can water your horse.
These places are set up for equestrian but they're good for us because the parking spot has a water hose for your horse which is good for us to drink. It'll say non-potable but that just means it doesn't have a city chlorine sticker
.
We've been drinking well water for years so we don't get too excited about these warnings. They had water and we had our solar panels and our generator.
It was a great place to visit while seeing the manatees.
This was our staging point to go see the manatees we settled in and even a week prior we had made a reservation at the Crystal River dive site. It was about 20 minutes or so down south of us so that's what we did and next day.
